PDC Wrapup

is done, and I'm back in Redmond. A truly cool experience. On the last day, the coolest talk I attended dove into the intricacies with the .NET 2.0 Garbage Collector. This is an area that managed coders can know nothing about, relying on it to work under the covers. But hearing about the improved performance and considerations that went into the modifications was really interesting.

I think what has made this year's PDC so remarkable is the sheer number of new technologies coming out. Virtually every session targeted Indigo, Avalon, ASP.NET 2.0, Whidbey, Orcas, Vista, IIS7, or Office 12. In talking with some of the attendees, they felt overwhelmed (in a positive way) and truly energized about what's coming in the next 12 months.

I was most surprised by Expression ... I enjoyed the labs and was pleased at how polished it is. Since I seldom develop WinForms-based applications, I'm excited to explore this area with Avalon.

I highly recommend purchasing a set of the conference DVDs if you were unable to attend -- I know I'll be viewing them for all the sessions I was unable to attend.
